"Fun Olympics"
(Students with a purpose)
In this photograph, students from John Hershey High
School in Chicago created a “Fun Olympics” for special needs children. This
kind of activity illustrates a prime example of how beneficial community
service is to a student’s life. The special needs kids’ joy reflects itself in
the eyes of the students’. When a student experiences direct appreciation for
their time and compassion, they gain a boost in self-esteem. Suddenly, they
realize how their effort makes a difference and their actions have a meaning.
This change in attitude sparks motivation. Students with a purpose are
confident and motivated—the perfect combination to produce an achiever in
school. (Clowes, George)
